Biography

Born in Dublin in 1965, James Hanley was educated at University College Dublin and the National College of Art and Design. By studying the history of art before formally training as a painter, Hanley was able to bring together a sophisticated understanding of painting, modes of representation, iconography and contemporary life in Ireland to create his own distinctive style. Best known for his photo-realistic portraiture, his sitters have ranged from cultural icons and political figures to the ev
eryman. His success has been reflected in various commissions for portraits, including one from the National Gallery and another from the Gaiety Theatre, as well as exhibiting at the RHA and having a solo show in the Solomon Gallery in 2004. He has been Secretary of the Council of the RHA since 2005, was elected to Aosdána in 2008 and recently elected to the Board of Governors of the National Gallery of Ireland.
